Fascinating article by Ben Smith in The New Republic (now a part of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy) on the possibility of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg running as an independent in the 2008 presidential race.
First, gut reaction: If Bloomberg runs, the GOP wins in 2008. His instincts are too inherently nanny-state and big government to appeal to conservatives; he'll split the Democratic/liberal/not conservative vote with the Democratic nominee.
